Shamrocks Double Islanders
The Tier 1 Jr. B Shamrocks avenged their one loss so far, doubling the visiting Delta Islanders 10-5 Saturday at the Q Center. Delta picked up the win last Sunday by a 7-6 margin.
Tyler Williams got the start in goal for Victoria with Christopher Paddon his counterpart. The home team opened scoring at 2:25, Sawyer McKay finding twine on a short hopper from outside the dotted line. Delta replied at 5:34 Wyatt Groom with a quick stick from the side. The Rocks took the lead off the stick of Dane Kinney at 8:48 on a hard, low shot and extended the lead to a pair when Jax Heavenor netted a beauty, taking a pass in front ad shoveling it low. Once again the visitors got within a goal on Brendan Hibbert’s goal at 17:20 from outside the dotted line. With 6 seconds left on the clock, Sawyer collected his second, reaching around from behind for a 4-2 Victoria lead after 20 minutes.
Delta opened scoring in the middle frame just 30 seconds in, Ryan Roberts’ shot from behind the net just sneaking in. The Rocks replied with three straight unassisted goals to open up some breathing room. First it was Heavenor picking up his second at 1:10 from just inside the dotted line. Benson Hunt followed up at 7:41, driving to the net after a successful penalty kill. At 12:07 Jordan Alexander added a shorthanded tally going coast to coast. The visitors capitalized on a power play at 17:10, Michael Burt with a shot that bounced up and in. That made it 7-4 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Once again Delta scored first in period 3, Garrett Talkington connecting with the man advantage at 8:14. After that, it was all Victoria, beginning with Kinney picking up his second off a rebound in front at 9:13. At 14:07 Landon Lockwood picked the far side, cutting to the net and Theo Munroe added a power play goal at 15:43 with a quick stick in front to make the final 10-5.
The game was scrambly at times but Victoria dominated in shots on goal by a 61-33 margin and, despite being assessed 5 of the 6 penalties came out with 1 shorthanded goal and a power play marker.
Landon Lockwood led the offense with a goal and 3 assists while 4 players had 3-point nights – Sawyer McKay and Dane Kinney each with 2 goals and 1 helper while Theo Munroe and Jordan Alexander had a goal and 2 assists. Jax Heavenor chipped in 2 goals, Jaden Roach 2 assists and Benson Hunt had the other Victoria marker. Tyler Williams was solid between the pipes making 28 saves to pick up the win.
The Tier 1 Shamrocks are on the road Sunday to take on the Richmond Roadrunners. Next home action is Saturday, June 20 when they will face the New Westminster Salmonbellies. That game is scheduled for the Juan de Fuca Arena at 5:00 pm due to a professional fight card being held at the Q Center.
