Shamrocks Hammer Delta
The Delta Islanders came into the Q Centre Saturday to face the Tier 1 Shamrocks but the Rocks were inhospitable hosts, handing the visitors a 20-4 loss. Scoring came early and often in the contest as Victoria held period leads of 6-3 and 15-4 en route to the win.
It was call-up Kyle Pepper opening the scoring for the Rocks just 1:18 in and then Victoria took advantage of some costly Delta penalties to rattle off 3 straight power play goals, coming off the sticks of Casey Wilson, Garrett Murray and Patrick Dodds by the 5-minute mark. Delta replied with a power play goal at 10:42, Zack Kyriacethys getting the ball behind Victoria starting goaltender Ryan Atkinson. No worries as Dodds picked up his second at12:14, that one coming shorthanded. Theteams traded goals, with one Victoria marker sandwiched between two Delta goals, the Rocks goal coming from Denton MacDonald. That made it 6-3 after the first 20 minutes.
The second period was more of the same as wave after wave of Victoria’s offense advanced on the Delta net. The Islanders picked up one goal on a delayed penalty call but it was all Shamrocks as Garrett scored his second of the contest, Casey Wilson picked up 2 to get his hat trick, Isaac Swan added a pair, as did Brody Black with Dodds picking up his third of the contest as well. Jonathan Boyd added a goal in the middle frame.
The third period saw less scoring but a lot more animosity as there was a steady stream to the penalty box. All 5 Victoria goals were scored by special teams. Swan picked up his hat trick marker on the power play just 9 seconds into the period. Travis Pullan got a shorthanded marker at 5:03, getting in close, that was followed by Nic Coleman’s shortie at 6:02 with a quick stick to the bottom corner. Two power play goals followed, both from Jonathan Boyd, at 12:05 and14:31 to put the icing on the cake.
It was a great night to pad individual stats as 4 players had hat tricks. Isaac Swan and Casey Wilson each had 3 goals and 4 helpers while Patrick Dodds and Jonathan Boyd each had the hat trick and 2 assists. Garrett Murray had a pair of goals. Singles came from Travis Pullan, Nic Coleman, Kyle Pepper and Denton MacDonald who also chipped in 7 assists. Ryan Atkinson went the distance between the pipes to pick up the win.
The Tier 1Rocks are on the mainland today (Sunday) to take on the Port Coquitlam Saints but return home next Saturday, May 19 at 1:00 pm to take on the Langley Thunder at the Q Centre.
