Shamrocks Sink Lakers
The Tier 1 Rocks kept their perfect record intact with a pair of weekend victories, beginning Saturday with a home floor 12-3 win over the Burnaby Lakers. Both teams competed with a number of regulars out of the lineup but, for the Shamrocks, it didn’t show on the floor.
Starting goaltenders were Colby Hyland for the home side and Oliver Collett for the visitors. Burnaby was first on the scoresheet, Anthony Vargas scoring at 4:25 of the opening frame, getting in close. It took just 24 seconds for Victoria to reply, Evan Law connecting from in close and the offense got rolling from there. At 6:58 Brett Herle gave the Rocks a lead they would not relinquish, going to the net and at 16:52 Brett Bridges made it 3-1 for the home team with a power play goal, a bullet to the top corner from outside the dotted line. That was all the scoring in period 1 but Victoria kept the offense in high gear into the second period.
Law picked up his second of the contest just 1:13 into the middle frame with a shot off the post and Herle collected his second at 3:24, that goal coming shorthanded. Burnaby got 1 back at 13:57 off the stick of Jordan Cecchetto from inside the dotted line but Victoria came back with 2 straight before the period ended. Law got the hat trick with a goal at 18:32, going to the net. Bridges then picked up his second of the game, finishing off some great ball control with the goaltender on the bench and the extra attacker on the floor at 19:58. That gave the Rocks a 7-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Period 3 saw the Shamrocks rattle off 5 straight goals to put the game out of reach. Jaxon Parkhouse, a call-up from the Westshore Bears, scored shorthanded at 6:44 and Zach Hulbert opened up a 7-goal lead at 9:18. Cohen Heavenor tallied at 9:55 on a bouncer and Koen Block made it 11-2 at 16:15 from in close with the teams playing 4-on-4. Block added his second at 18:22 on a shot that dribbled across the line. Burnaby managed to get 1 back, Vargas with his second of the contest at 18:31 but that was all they could muster.
Evan Law led Victoria’s offense with a hat-trick and 2 assists while Brett Herle and Brett Bridges each had a pair of goals and 2 helpers. Koen Block chipped in 2 goals and an assist with other goals coming from Cohen Heavenor, Zack Hulbert and Jaxon Parkhouse. Sean Clark and Hunter Clarke each had 3 helpers.
The Tier 1 Shamrocks were on the road Sunday to face the Maple Ridge Burrards. They kept their record intact with a 13-12 overtime win. Brett Herle had 4 goals and a helper, Brett Bridges had the hat trick and 2 assists, Evan Law 2 goals and 3 assists and Sean Clark a 7-point night on a goal and 6 helpers.
Next action for the Shamrocks is Saturday, June 25 at the Q Center where they will host the Burrards. Game time is 12:30. That will be followed by the Junior ‘A’ Rocks hosting the New Westminster Salmonbellies at 3:30 pm.
